Dear Steve & Jon, I am personally turned off by individuals who blatantly network at social gatherings for their own personal gain, like when they are looking for a job or marketing their business. In your career column, why don’t you suggest that they cool it during the holiday season? Signed: Turned Off |

Dear Turned Off, Sorry, Scrooge, but I strongly urge job seekers to use every opportunity to network and that includes holiday parties too. It’s the season of gift-giving and remembering those less fortunate, so this year, why not give the gift of information to those job seekers who could use your help? It won’t cost you a dime and don’t even have to wrap it. Plus, you may find it adds to your merriment of the season – it certainly will add to theirs. “God bless us, each and every one!” |
Dear Turned Off, It sounds as though you have never been un-employed over the holidays. Given the good spirits that generally prevail during this season, it can be the most productive networking time for the unemployed individuals. More power to those job seekers who can keep their motivation up to continue networking through the holiday season. Why don’t you wear a “Bah-Humbug” sign around your neck and in my column I will advise readers to avoid people like you. Problem solved. |
