Ask The Employment Experts - Social Media Junkie

Steve Hines Dear Steve & Jon,

In my job search, which is more productive, being on LinkedIn, You-Tube, Twitter, MySpace Facebook, or writing a Blog?

Dear Junkie,

LinkedIn by a mile, with Twitter a distant second. Forget the others. A few weeks ago, I read an article stating that more than one-half of all recruiters use LinkedIn extensively, and I suspect that figure is much higher now. From my own experience, rarely does a week pass that I don’t have a least one client who obtained an interview from a recruiter who found him/her on LinkedIn. Just be certain that in the Summary/Specialties section, you have all the right buzz words, keywords, or key phrases that a recruiter might use in doing a keyword search. I have many other LinkedIn tips that I will share at the APICS Atlanta, September 20th, How to Find a Job workshop too.

Dear Junkie,

Since you are primarily seeking job search results, restrict your Social Media networking to after-hours and make it secondary to more active forms of networking, such as, getting face-to-face with potential employers and with individuals who can refer you to potential employers. Each has its place, but the telephone is still more effective in your job search than emails and social networking, although I would hate to try to find a job in today’s world without the internet for research and for email communications. At least have your profile on LinkedIn and find ways to become visible in the LinkedIn forums and discussion groups.
