Ask The Employment Experts - Shove It

Steve Hines Dear Steve & Jon,

You mean the company you called me about this week, does not want to talk with me just because I do not have a CPIM or CSCP? Take their job and shove it.

Signed: Shove It

Dear Shove It,

I understand your anger. I have a close friend who has been forced to work in the same job as a Temp for four years now, because the company requires a college degree for his position -- same work, less pay!

Regarding certification, though, I have written several times in the past that more and more companies are requiring certifications for many positions – not just in manufacturing, but in all industries. As a part of Career Planning, all workers need to be aware of changes and trends in their industry, and this information is best found in their professional association, most definitely including APICS and ISM.

Although this will not help you now, perhaps it will serve as a clarion call to readers here to begin the certification process themselves, and indirectly you will have helped others.

Dear Shove It,

I know it is difficult not to take disappointing news very personally. Your strong response, although understandable, does not change the specifications on the client’s job requirements calling for the certification. They view the certification as a benchmark implying the necessary level of professionalism they are seeking.

As recruiters, occasionally we are successful getting a hiring official to bend their specs for an otherwise well qualified candidate. Rapid advancement, responsible job titles, strong references, and a long list of significant accomplishments that the hiring official can relate to, sometimes will offset the missing certification, but not always.

I guess it is better you vent at me than possibly at a potential hiring official. I will have to think about that.
