Ask The Employment Experts - Interviews Suck

Steve Hines Dear Steve & Jon,

Do you agree with me? Interviews suck.

Dear Fed Up,

Sounds like you have had some bad experiences with interviewing. Think of the whole hiring process as a game or sport, and that interviewing is just another part to be mastered. You can't play baseball without learning the basics – throw, hit and run. You may be the fastest runner in the league, but if you can't hit and throw the ball straight, your career will go nowhere. Did you hit a home run the first time you ever batted? Of course not! You had to learn how to bat and then practice, practice, practice. Interviewing is the same: the more you learn and practice, the better you become. Now, do I think interviewing sucks? Maybe. Probably. But what I think won't change anything. Now quit whining and get back in the game!

Dear Fed Up,

I have to agree with you. Most interviews suck, for the interviewer and for the interviewee. Surveys of HR professionals show that they think the right person is selected less than half the time. There can be many reasons but the most common reason is that all parties have not agreed upon what they are looking for. The only redeeming feature of the employment interview is that it is the best system we have and when done correctly, by both parties, it can give us good results. For sanity purposes, you need to assume you have responsibility for the outcome of the interview, but be realistic about your actual odds if the company is interviewing ten people for one job.
